There I was, enjoying a few one-hits, snacking on trail mix enhanced with M&Ms, and perusing High Times for the photography, as one does, when I came upon the article, “Top 10 Comedians Who Smoke Weed.” Humor is thought-provoking, and judging individuals is contemporary society’s interpretation of the Colosseum — which brings us to a summary of High Times’ rankings and some thoughts on greatness.

1) First up, and no surprise at No. 1, is Seth Rogan, star of Knocked Up and creative talent behind Pineapple Express and Superbad. This is the man who explained to Letterman about his smoking weed schedule, “I’m never really at zero.”

2) Sarah Silverman enjoys weed as a treat, and as she told Andy Borowitz, “I have found if I smoke a little pot before I play basketball I become amazing.” She catches herself saying things like ‘not on my watch’ a lot.” Trash-talking Sarah Silverman over net? Excellent!

3) The articulate champion of weed rights, Bill Maher, lights his audience up with humor and warnings that America can’t afford to become complacent about marijuana legalization. Real Time with Bill Maher, the 420th episode, was done right, with a marijuana-filled cake. And Maher was the model for a portrait composed entirely of High Times articles.

4) Whoopi Goldberg isn’t just a comedic genius. A fan of the herb, the Sister Act star is also the co-creator behind the medical cannabis brand Whoopi and Maya, offering topicals, bath soaks, and edibles emphasizing CBD-rich products.

5) Dave Chappelle, who wrote and starred in Half Baked, a comedy about stealing marijuana, swears that “From now on, I smoke weed exclusively with white people […]. All white people talk about when they get high is other times when they got high.” And ask questions like: can eating weed get you high?

6) Does Chelsea like pot enough to earn a spot on the list? Chelsea Does. Handler crafted an entire episode of Chelsea Does around weed and published a picture on Instagram, posing with everyone’s favorite plant.

7) Whether starring in Dead Poet’s Society, Good Will Hunting, or knocking out stand-up audiences onstage, Robin Williams was comic gold, and his weed rants righteous.

8) Joan Rivers told an interviewer, “With drugs, you’re out of control. You’re a fool.” Did she fool around? Hell yes, better yet, she seriously sparked a bowl on camera. Rivers told Jane Lynch, “It was great. Would I do it again? No, because you eat.” Rivers might be good to ask, does eating weed get you high?

9) Jack Black shows up for host Doug Benson on the Getting Doug With High TV show. He described getting stoned with his band, Tenacious D., and “seeing if the high takes you to another level of creativity.” While Black gave up toking after the first album, he appeared on the show so as not to disappoint the host.

10) Stand-up comedian/author/activist/actor Margaret Cho is another comedic powerhouse to converse on Getting Doug With High, where the conversation drifted to smoking freely. Cho coughed up the info about festivals like Bonnaroo and Made in America, painting a picture where “50 thousand people were smoking pot.”

Solid choices, right? And yet, there are too many superstars of stoner humor that deserve a shout-out. Here are some suggestions:

Two names: Cheech Martin and Tommy Chong. On some deep, cosmic level where poetic justice balances the scales, this comedy duo deserves a spot of honor on superior stoner comics lists.

George Carlin, famous for “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” hit the number No. 2 spot — right after Richard Pryor, on Rolling Stone’s list of 50 best stand-up comics of all time.

Lenny Bruce, a stand-up comic/social critic who spun a freestyle form merging politics, satire, religion, sex, and profanity. In 2003, Bruce received NY State’s first posthumous pardon for the 1964 conviction in his obscenity trial. “Marijuana will be legal someday, because the many law students who now smoke pot will one day be Congressmen and they will legalize it to protect themselves,” he presciently observed.

Bill Hicks, a comedian/satirist/musician, dived into the topics others fear to tread: religion, philosophy, and politics. He observed, “When you’re high, you can do everything you normally do just as well — you just realize that it’s not worth the fucking effort. There is a difference.”

Joe Rogan. Love him, hate him, he’s the man to go to when you want to ask questions like can you get high from eating weed?
