The keynote panel, “From Weed Wars to High Hopes: A Pop Culture Journey from Legacy to Rescheduling,” dives into the stories behind two pairs of iconic brothers as they grow from legacy activists and early entrepreneurs to industry legends. Through their many endeavors, the DeAngelos and Ashbels have helped to break down stigma, opened doors for the mainstream to learn how business founders overcame regulatory hurdles, managed compliance, and scaled operations, all while helping patients and preserving the culture of cannabis.
This lively conversation will juxtapose DeAngelos’ ‘Weed Wars’ (2011) on Discovery Channel to the Jimmy Kimmel-produced Ashbel’s’ series ‘High Hopes’ (2024) on Hulu as they examine how the cannabis space has evolved from underground markets to regulated frameworks. They’ll discuss how being a part of pop culture has shaped their business outlook and optimism for the future of cannabis despite a rollercoaster-ride decade in California’s up-and-down market.
Additionally, look to the main stage for the return of MJBiz’s always highly anticipated State of the Industry 2024: Achieve Success While Navigating Industry Upheaval. This session is for anyone looking to stay informed about the latest challenges and opportunities in the cannabis space. This comprehensive update on key industry developments from the past year will include topics such as: rescheduling milestones and challenges; state crackdowns on hemp-derived THC; Michigan vs. California for battle of the top cannabis market; pesticides scandals and more.
As always, the editorial team of MJBiz will also look forward to 2025 for forecasts about future legalization, the Farm Bill and intoxicating hemp; federal policy under the next administration; and the road to rescheduling.

About Andrew DeAngelo
Andrew is a Global Cannabis Consultant & Strategic Advisor / Executive Coach and Founder of Andrew DeAngelo Consulting. He is a visionary leader with a proven track record of enacting systemic social change and developing best practices in cannabis.
Andrew lends his vast cannabis business and political expertise as a consultant for hire to the global cannabis community at large, including several strategic partnerships with the world’s leading cannabis-centric service firms.
Over three decades as an activist, Andrew worked on a variety of voter initiatives which legalized medical and adult-use cannabis in San Francisco, Washington D.C, and the State of California. As a co-founder of Harborside, Andrew has pioneered legal cannabis business processes and provided groundbreaking political engagement and thought leadership to the cannabis community — leading the design and development of gold-standard cannabis retail by innovating many “firsts” for the industry. This includes: introducing CBD medicines to heal severely epileptic children, implementing the first lab-testing program in the history of cannabis dispensing, creating child-resistant packaging for edibles, standardizing inventory tracking, initiating senior outreach, and successfully preventing the federal government from seizing Harborside in forfeiture actions against the company in 2012.
He runs an entertainment production company, DeAngelo Brothers Productions (DAB), with his brother Steve. Andrew is co-founder of the non-profit Last Prisoner Project (LPP) and a founding Board of Directors member of the California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA) where he served from 2013 to 2020.
