High I’m Christine Sclafani your culture host for TNMNews and today I wanna address a question I am always asked about. And that is: “How Many Grams are in an Ounce?”
How many times have you bought some weed and you thought you were getting more than you bargained for but it turns out you got less than what you bargained for?
And why is cannabis weighed and sold by the gram from cultivator to dispensary when buying buy the pound, and yet they sell grams, eighths, quarters, and ounces in retail? Hmmm. It’s interesting how we mix the metric system when you have to be exact… I know math might not be your thing, but it’s important to know these things if you are at some point going to buy some weed.
So, according to Merriam-Webster, a gram is “a metric unit of mass equal to 1,000th of a kilogram.” Grams are used to weigh everything from seed to sale in the cannabis industry and are the building blocks for personal cannabis purchases. Although like I previously stated, marijuana flower is usually sold at retail establishments by the eighth of an ounce, quarter of an ounce or a full ounce… And extracts are sold by the gram and the half gram… WHYYYYYYYYY?????
So anyway, how many grams ARE in an ounce?
Well, the official answer is 28.3495. That’s right… 28.3495 grams per ounce.
Now most people will round that down to 28 grams per ounce. So if you buy large quantities you end up losing a little over 1 gram for every 3 ounces sold, and since there are 16 ounces to a pound, you will lose a little over 5 grams per pound – and that can be 5 joints! I know it doesn’t sound like a lot but it definitely adds up over time.
So, here it goes…
There are
28 grams to an ounce.
14 grams to a half an ounce
7 grams to a quarter ounce.
AND 3.5 grams to an eighth.
Oh and if you buy less than an eighth, you’d be buying by the gram at that point anyway.
And for all of you ballers out there…
There are 453.592 grams to a pound which is always rounded UP to 454 when buying in bulk.
So a quick recap:
There are officially 28.3495 grams per ounce.
Most people will round that down to 28 grams per ounce.
So that means there are:
28 grams to an ounce.
14 grams to a half ounce
7 grams to a quarter ounce.
AND 3.5 grams to an eighth.
And there you have it. You are now, officially smarter than a fifth grader and smarter than you were BEFORE you watched this video!
Remember 28 grams to an ounce.
