The Vermont Coalition to Regulate Marijuana is holding a lobby day in support of S. 54, which would regulate and tax cannabis sales
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont legislative leaders and Attorney General T.J. Donovan will join advocates at the state capitol Thursday for a lobby day to rally support for S. 54, a bill to regulate and tax cannabis sales to adults 21 and older. At 11 a.m., the Vermont Coalition to Regulate Marijuana will hold a news conference in the Cedar Creek Room on the second floor of the State House.
Featured speakers at the news conference will include Attorney General Donovan, Sen. Dick Sears, and Rep. Sarah Copeland-Hanzas.
The group will be encouraging lawmakers to support S. 54, which has already passed the Senate in a 23-5 vote and the House Government Operations Committee in a 10-1 vote. Next, S. 54 will be considered by other House committees. A detailed summary of the bill is available here.
“Most Vermonters agree it is time to regulate cannabis sales,” said Laura Subin, director of the Vermont Coalition to Regulate Marijuana. “For some, it’s about improving public health and safety by bringing cannabis markets above board. Others don’t want to see Vermont miss out on the economic development, job creation, and tax revenue that is proving beneficial in other states. Three cannabis retail stores are now open within 15 miles of Vermont’s southern border, so this is no longer a question of who goes first — it’s a question of where Vermonters are going to buy their cannabis.”
