Columbus, OH — On Tuesday, legal cannabis sales for adults 21 and over will begin in Ohio.
“Today we celebrate as Ohioans’ support for legalization culminates in the launch of a regulated adult-use cannabis market. This milestone will not only generate substantial economic benefits for the state, but will increase personal freedom and end the injustice of cannabis prohibition,” said Matthew Schweich, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project.
The Division of Cannabis Control has issued dual-use certificates of operation to 98 medical cannabis dispensaries, which will be allowed to sell to adult-use consumers starting August 6. Adults 21 years of age or older with a valid ID will be able to purchase a total of up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and up to 15 grams of concentrate.
Less than a year ago, Ohioans approved the MPP-backed measure (Issue 2) to legalize, regulate, and tax cannabis for adults’ use with 57% of the vote, making Ohio the 24th state to legalize cannabis for adult use, and the 14th state to do so through a ballot question approved by voters.
MPP was a major financial supporter of the Issue 2 campaign in Ohio. The organization’s involvement in Ohio cannabis reform efforts dates back to 2015, when MPP joined forces with local advocates to spearhead a ballot initiative campaign to enact medical cannabis, which spurred the legislature to pass the state’s medical cannabis law.
