Aside from their appearance and consistency, the major difference from each product to the next is simply the extraction process used to create the concentrate in the first place.
You may have heard of a dab making kit or a dab rig and torch. And if you’ve watched my segments here on TNMNEWS then I’m pretty sure you’ve heard me talking about a dab rig and torch!
These are the tools you’ll need. Often referred to as dabs or dabbing, marijuana concentrates are created through extraction methods that determine how the concentrate looks, the texture, its THC content, and how it is consumed. Methods of extraction include use of mechanical separation of compounds, and using solvents to separate the trichomes and other properties from the plant.
These processes make it possible to extract the most desirable parts of the cannabis plant while maintaining the integrity of those compounds we wish to keep.
Typically those are the THC, CBD, flavonoids, and terpenes, AND it’s how medical marijuana facilities are able to produce specific effect-driven products aimed at inducing symptom relief based on a particular strain’s medicinal qualities.
There’s different kinds of concentrates.
Kief and rosins are the most true-to-form concentrates.
Essentially, kief is the little THC crystals that form on the flower of the marijuana plant, called trichomes. It naturally shakes off, and can feel very sticky on your fingertips when your breaking up weed. Cannabis companies have figured out a way to collect it mechanically through freezing and dry sifting.
Rosins on the other hand, are produced using extreme heat and pressure to extract the cannabis oils.
Cannabis can also be concentrated using liquid solvents, and this method of extraction produces shatter, budders and batters, crystalline, crumble, and distillates.
Shatter has a brittle or sometimes taffy-like consistency and is created with solvents like butane, CO2, and ethanol.
Budders are created using the same method, but then it is whipped up into a more creamy consistency.
Crumble is pretty much a drier version of budders and batters only with more air mixed in.
Crystalline is made similarly to rock candy and with the same texture –
And distillates are made using extreme heat and by separating cannabinoids according to their boiling points.
All require a dab rig kit bundle to use – unless you intend to smoke them with your weed, or ingest them via edibles, suppositories, or sublingually.
Concentrates that are to be consumed via vaping or smoking require a dab rig bundle in order to enjoy them. You will need a dab rig kit with torch that gets hot enough to heat the product if you are consuming them on their own, but products like kief, crumble, and even tinctures can be rolled into a joint or packed into a bowl with flower.
Sticky waxes and distillates are harder to work with but you can make THC bombs that are easier to handle by rolling your budder, wax, distillate or other sticky substance in kief or ground flower first and then smoking it that way.
